Artichokes in the Northeast?

Friends of mine who run an organic farm in a warm part of northern Vermont were wondering if there are varieties of artichoke they can plant. Has to be organic, of course, and they normally do everything from seed (they raise seeds indoors from March to early June, not surprisingly). If so, any tips on growing them?

Artichokes are easy from seed and seed is available from a great many sources, including quite a few good Italian heirloom strains.

The trick for you is two-part: grow them strictly as annuals and sow the seed indoors in winter to be planted out as 2-gallon plants in late spring.

They like water during the active growing period and you should be able to harvest quite a few in summer into fall.
