Apple Pandowdy

6 cups baking apples sliced (approx. 6 medium apples)  
1/2 cup molasses  
1/4 cup granulated sugar 
1 teaspoon cinnamon  
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg  
1/4 teaspoon ginger  
1/4 teaspoon salt  
5 tablespoons butter, melted
Pie Dough for 1 pie (your favorite recipe)

Preheat the oven to 350.  Generously butter a 9x13 baking pan.  Combine the apples with the molasses, sugar, spices, and salt.  Pour into baking pan.  Roll out pie dough into a rectangle ¼" thick.  Place over apple mixture, tucking in the sides.  Brush with melted butter then make a number of large slashes in dough to allow steam to escape.  Bake for 45 minutes.  Gently break up the crust, into medium sized pieces and push into the apple juices.  Return to the oven to bake an additional 20 minutes or until apples are tender and top is browned.  Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.  Serve with ice cream or heavy cream drizzled over top
