agreed.  A family stopped me in the parking lot the other day and asked me where the Olive Garden was, I told them this place right over here was good, "No, we need to find the Olive garden, that's where we like to eat", Oh My!!

Mr decoy - i once came home to my apartment i was sharing and my flatmate was cooking for herself.  There was a pot on the stove, a little too small for what she was making and it was there steaming away with the cover askew.  I looked more carefully and the whole thing looked like some steaming dragon's head with a tongue coming out of it!  the tongue was too big, and the tip was sticking out.

However, that didn't put me off tongue, and i actually like it.

Tripe disgusts me.  My mother made it once, and the whole house stunk for days.  I'm very sensitive to smells and that's one i just can't stand.  I would never eat kidneys, for what they contain, nor pajata (veal intestine, full of its "milk") (a roman specialty).  Larvae and worms are out, and snails, though i did eat them once out of necessity (i wanted to rent a beautiful room and the landlords invited me for lunch and i felt i had to eat, and just blocked it out).  But a sicilian friend made these small snails for dinner once and just boiled them in tomato - they were black and they stunk the whole house, and he was pricking the black head with a toothpick and pulling it, and it stretched then popped out.  YUCK.  I swear, i hallucinated that smell for months, every time i'd smell someone cooking i'd think it was the smell of those snails - wet dog has nothing on that.

But the really deep disgust came once when I'd stopped eating beef because of mad cow, i tried some ostrich meat.  I had it ground, and thought it might make a good meat loaf.  All was fine but when i was mixing it, i noticed it didn;t look meaty but gelatinous.  The thought swept through my head (ha ha, this is what some alien animal meat might look like on another planet) and suddenly i got a disgust reaction that made me want to heave every time i tried to eat it - everyone else thought it was fine.  It was the texture when raw that freaked me out.

Food never disgusts me, even if it's something I wouldn't eat.  The only thing that disgusts me is people.  I am very put off by how some people handle food, I watch someone very closely in a kitchen and if I see bad food safety habits I usually do not eat.  I'll never forget walking into the kitchen and catching a member of my husband's family serve spaghetti by grabbing it out of the pot with bare hands and putting it in my plate.  I've never eaten pasta at that house ever again, actually I've barely ever eaten anything there ever again - that's how much I get put off by something like that.

@Siduri, your description of snails is frightening.  If it makes you feel any better I spent the better part of this summer ridding Krete of all its snails - it is now a safe place for you to visit.

    Best. Answer. Ever.

I had cow's tongue just a few weeks ago, the texture is nothing really bad: it's not gooey, it's not rubbery.... liver can be very good, in fact the texture is quite rich, smooth. I'm sure a LOT of people would love the texture if they didn't know what it is.

Hum ha or Harm Ha Sauce (or philipino bagoong)

it's a Chinese fermented shrimp paste

THE, no I mean THE most disgusting smell of any food stuffs I have ever smelled in the life!

Here's how bad it is, I had a boy friend who's Mom would make pork w/greens (watercress, long beans, ong choy, whatever) with Hum Ha;  flies would be bouncing, I mean for real, bouncing, in a swarm,

off the kitchen screen.  Talk about wanting to hurl!

I'm cringing now as I think about it.

All these years later (that was in my senior year of high school through my freshmen year of college)

I still have that smell stuck in my nose!

    I Just Like Food
First I'll say I generally eat what are considered normal foods, particularly in the United States. I have no interest in eating an egg that has a partially grown chicken inside of it but I am aware that in certain cultures that may be more acceptable. I have never been a picky eater. My mother called me "Wolf" because I'd "wolf" up any food in front of me. I was around 13 when I started yelling at her to stop calling me that because my friends thought it was just freakin' adorable (not something a 13 yr old boy wants his friends to think). My mother passed away in 2005 but to this day a friend I met at 12 from Moscow still occasionally jokingly yells "HEY WOLFY" in the phone when he calls.

As I've grown into an adult, I've really only turned away from a couple things..
    1. I don't want to eat liver.. and generally any offal. I realize it has a history in food, but this is one area where I am not at all interested in partaking in part because the organs (liver in particular) are like filters, and I'm not exactly interested in consuming areas that have higher concentrations of bad stuff
    2. I really cannot stand the texture of raw fish. While revered by many it is just plain nasty to me and it's not even the "raw" that makes me not want to eat it, it's the baseless mushy texture. I don't find that enjoyable in the least and I have tried it. The flavor was nothing worth coming back for over the issue I have with the texture.

/img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif   If you wouldn't mind, could you come to Rome and rid my terrace of snails?  I had an invasion of slugs for many years (we'd put a line of salt around the doors so they wouldn't come in during the rainy season) which are worse and more disgusting than practically anything i can imagine inhabiting my same space, but now they all seem to have gotten houses but are still pretty disgusting.  So i will feed you in exchange for ridding me of snails, like you did in Krete - how about it?

    Interesting contributions.

Anything mushy  in texture for example: polenta, rice pudding, green peas or over wet food; foul aromas of over used Olive Oil at taverns who are frying calamari & fried potatoes; all Soy Bean products; 99% of canned or tinned food as now anchovies and tuna come in Jars;  Fast Food Chains no matter who their founders are or where they are and Orange rinded cheeses & Orange Tinted cheese with waxy toxic finish.

Ok let me say this.  People who eat snails do not go around eating slugs, or collecting snails of window sills and outdoor areas of any home really.  The process of collecting snails from the wild is to go up to the mountain as soon as it starts raining for that is when they start to crawl from under the rocks where they live.  There they live cleanly amongst thyme and rosemary.  We do not eat snails that slide across driveways.  No wonder people think they are disgusting.  So while I'd love to help you I must pass on the road kill but come over anyway for one of your hot as heck roasts.

KFC good.  Sorry.  Not for everyday, home made is much better but I really like their little hot wings when in a hurry.

Hi, Ok you don't like liver or cow tongue, it all depends on how you make it. Liver- so many ways to make, ok take the liver and dip in egg and then bread crumbs. Ok now cook some bacon till done and take out then put in the liver and brown on both sides take out put in your onions until done, put in your cooked liver, put in a can of diced tomatos, your bacon that is crumbled and spices, I just open my cabinet and put what ever spices I want. I like to expermint, also you could put in red wine and let that all simmer for a while, I have been cooking for over 50yrs so I just can tell when it is done. Don't be afraid, just try it. The cow tongue is a little difficult I made it many yrs ago and I remember I have to boil first and take the film off the tongue when done after cool, then I cut it up and put in pot and through in diced tomatos, some broth, potatos or what ever you want to put in, then cover and cook. Oh I use alot of garlic, I wish I was there to show you how I do things, but it is so hard for me to explain cause I put everything ins except the kitchen sink. Ok if you need any italian recipes or veg or anything just email me and I will let you know, Sorry I can't tell you exact ingredents I just don't measure. Ok take care. Deb

You love peas, make peas and macaroni, ditalini, sorry about the spelling I don't have the box, but use can peas alway cause you need the juice, saute garlic if you want onion, but that does not go in it, my version, so after you saute garlic put in diced tomatos and the juice of the peas, spices, oragano, basil, of course salt and pepper. let simmer, make macaroni, but only use a cup and you put in sause and good grated cheese. try it you will like it. I use flavored diced tomatos. italian ones. I use 3 can tomatos and 2 can peas. don't be afraid just experiment. Oh I said to saute garlic, saute in olive oil

You have to put all that stuff on liver to disguise how awful it is :)
