When I was in India we had a snack that was a chip of some sort with a salsa. I believe the the chips were made from crispy chapata. The salsa was a tomato based, spicy dip. It was excellent. I can't remember what it was called and I can't find it on the internet. We were in Madras. Don't know if it is a regional thing. It was smooth, not chunky. It was almost like a soup. But the flavor was very unique and I would love to be able to make some.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? Hell, do I?

I believe the "chip" may have been a "pompadom". I think that's the spelling? As for the "salsa" I think I know what you're talkin bout but I can't recall the name either.

    Yes , they are poppadoms.
There are items that are usually served with these as a choice :
I think the one you are thinking about is tamarind chutney/sauce . There are others too
    - mango chutney
    - onion salad
    - mint sauce , raita
    - tomato chutney
    Or lime pickle

If you go to www.indianfoodforever.com you should be able to find a recipe there. Tamarind chutney is very easy to make, check the website I posted , it should be there.

I think what you are referring to is papadam also called applam in Madras. If you ate only those, the salsa is most probably tomato chutney. What else did you have with the meal? There are a lot of dishes that are smooth soup which are South Indian delicacy.
