I'm always looking for places to "talk" about food and cooking.  I'm not a "chef" but a pretty darn good COOK.  I check out this site and when I saw latest responses to just about every post said "today"... figured there's a lot going on here!?!

When I find I new site, I like to ask people there to tell me about their disasters in the kitchen.  My biggest, and potentially most expensive, was years ago when my Dad (BIG beef guy) decided Sunday dinner would be Beef Wellington.  Pretty sure he saw it on Frugal Gourmet... back in the day when cooking shows actually taught you how to cook... but that's another subject.

I was maybe 19-20 years old, still away at college, but home for a weekend or break.  Dad bought this big hunka tenderloin... I'm SURE it was serious $$$.  I had a cookbook and was totally comfortable in kitchen.  Made pastry dough, seasoned/wrapped beef, even used scraps of dough for "decorations".  It lookd really GOOD going into oven.  When it came out, looked FABULOUS... almost hurt myself patting my own back!!

Dad, brother, sister, grands and I sit down to Sunday dinner.  And Dad CANNOT cut thru the crust!?!  Brother LITERALLY rolling on diningroom floor.  Grandfather telling me "it's fine!"  We almost had to CHISEL the crust off... BUT that big $$ hunka beef was PERFECTLY medium rare... bordering on rare like Dad liked it.

I've never tried it again.  Not outta fear from first attempt... just haven't ever made good pie/pastry crust.

SOOO, now it's your turn to tell me about your kitchen BOMBS!!

Welcome, I think you'll find us an interesting bunch.  Yours doesn't sound like too much of a disaster I can't tell you how many times I've messed up pastry, in fact I can probably count on one hand the times that I have made pastry well.  Anyway, try the wellie again but used store-bought puff pastry.  You'll find it a piece of cake this time.

Hmm, can't think of my biggest blunder in the kitchen at the moment.  What keeps coming to mind is the time that I meant to squirt mustard on my hot dog but ended up pouring my diet coke all over it.  C'est la vie!

Literally every time I make a recipe for the first time I screw up something!

A great example is when I made cupcakes for the first time in high school-- I filled up the entire cupcake pan instead of filling it halfway. When they were finished baking I ended up making chocolate muffins! The tops rose so much that they spilled over and I ended up giving away that first batch to my teachers.
