  • Toaster ovens aren’t just for browning your bagel or warming up frozen pizza anymore. Lynn Alley, author of THE GOURMET SLOW COOKER, is earning a name for herself by finding unconventional and imaginative ways to prepare gourmet meals at home. In THE GOURMET TOASTER OVEN, she reveals why toaster ovens are ideal for creating simple yet sophisticated meals: they take up less space, use less energy, preheat quickly, and are cheaper than convection ovens. They also let you cook small meals more efficiently and provide additional oven space for side dishes when cooking a large meal. In this beautifully photographed book, Alley offers 50 breakfast, lunch, appetizer, dinner, and goodie recipes designed to serve two, promising incredible meals hot out of your (toaster) oven.

"The Gourmet Toaster Oven Simple and Sophisticated Meals for the Busy Cook"
    3/5,
I must say I went in skeptical when I started flipping through this book.  How can a college student afford, or store (in his dorm room) the ingredients needed for Chocolate Lava Cakes, Mexican Pizza (with shrimp), Rosemary Lemon Chicken Stuffed with Tapenade, Quiche Lorraine, Savory Cheesecakes, Olive Focaccia, Saganaki, Huevos Rancheros, or Scallops with Pancetta and Saffron?  Why would a single guy coming home from a hard day's work want to throw anything other than a grilled cheese sandwich in his toaster oven?  Why would I want to go out and purchase a toaster oven when I have a perfectly good gas stove and oven in my kitchen?  I then read the introduction…  I hadn't thought about efficiency, portability, and space considerations in boats and RV's… ease of use, ease of cleaning, versatility….

For my initial doubt, I personally apologize to Lynn Alley, and thank her for a fun and good source for some tasty and alluring toaster oven treats.  Lynn is a freelance food and wine journalist, author, and teacher.  In this book she has provided instruction for some basic and humble meals (simple without compromising taste and freshness), as well as “gourmet†favorites and a few international introductions.  I like that she took the time to talk about equipment and technique.  Her personal anecdotes added a nice lightness and friendliness to the recipes.  The fact that toaster ovens give our natural resources a slight break for small jobs is definitely a plus.  Joyce Oudkerk Pool furnished colorful, unembellished, crisp photographs, and in my opinion showed the food off nicely (hey, it made MY mouth water).

I may just go out and buy a toaster oven.
