  • For easy salad preparation, try the SoftWorks Salad Spinner. Simply press the soft, non-slip knob to start the basket spinning. Washing and drying leafy vegetables has never been simpler or more fun than with this gadget. One hand is all you need to press the soft, cushioned knob to start the spinning; when the built-in brake is applied and the job is done, the basket and bowl can be taken apart and used separately. The knob locks down for easy storage, and the spinner is dishwasher-safe. Use this tool with lettuce, raw spinach, broad-leafed herbs, and greens--they end up clean and oh-so-dry, and the drier your leaves, the better salad dressings will adhere.

Pros - Does the job, Stable, Compact for what it is, Easy to clean
Cons - Takes up more room than desired
First things first, there are more expensive and less expensive variants of this gadget on the market and I have to say that Oxo has done well to create tools and gadgets for the kitchen that are engineered and designed simply but effectively for a reasonable price. That is ever true in this case.

I never thought I would need a tool like this, but last summer I decided I would plant a mesclun mix of lettuce and while it was easy to wash the lettuce, drying them was another matter. With such delicate lettuce you don't want to be smothering it with a towel, and leaving it to drain for a prolonged period is defeating the purpose of having garden fresh lettuce.

If you are of the sort that buys pre-washed ready to cook lettuce, then I would say you will find this gadget limited in your use. There are other more creative ways to use it, but 95% of the time what we are wanting to do is adequately dry greens that we have thoroughly soaked to rinse and wash. You can use the inner container as a colander in a pinch, I have done that and so far nothing has melted!

Ultimately it is balanced, the drive handle recesses into the bowl to make it more compact, and at the end of the day it seems easy enough to clean.

    A solid buy for a uni-tasker.

I spin other things in mine as well, though usually vegetables, occasionally herbs. Graham Kerr used one on his show to dress a salad. He dressed the salad and spun it so it only had a sheen of vinaigrette, dressing the salad evenly and cutting out excess calories from superfluos dressing.

When ever I salt and drain vegetables like cucumber, eggplant, summer squashes, those go through the spinner as well. If you want to pre-rinse such drained vegetables to remove salt (as I need to), this gets all the salt and water/liquid off.
