Shaoxing Rice Wine

    Does anybody know how to find out a distributor for this Chinese rice wine? I live in Utah and only state run liquor stores are allowed to carry spirits, and of course none of them have this product. I can get the state to import me a case, but they require that I do the leg work to find a distributor. I'm told that Pagoda is a decent product, at least for cooking. I can get the salted stuff at the Asian markets of course, but I would very much like to get the unsalted variety for both cooking and drinking. Thanks anyone who can help!

    The salted stuff is what every one here in UT uses for cooking. And most cookbooks recommend those common brands.There,s a brand in a brown pottery jug with a red ribbon that is superior and I think unsalted. But the lack of labeling makes that unclear. The Asian store on 9000 south has it usually and I recently saw it at the South East Asian market on 900 S 400 E. It's quite a bit more expensive as well.

    As to drinking it straight, I don't drink so I don't know.

    Kind of available online for Utahns. You can't ship alcohol to Utah to your home address. You have to ship it to one of the State Liquor stores to pick it up and the vendor has to be registered with the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. And the customer pays extra fees for the privilege of picking it up at the Liquor Store.

    And as noted in the earlier posts, it can be bought in Asian grocers much more easily and cheaply.

    I can't help as I have no idea what is and is not available in the states, but I just wanted to mention that you could use dry sherry as an alternative

    We have government liquor stores here in Vancouver, BC, and a substantial Asian population. This is the Shaoxing rice wine I use. There's a couple of different varieties commonly available, always in beautiful ceramic bottles. Tastes a little sweet, like sherry, but not as heavy. Don't know that you could tell the difference if you use a lot of soy etc.

    This one is by Neurhong Brewing- it looks like the one sold by Pagoda, it comes in a red box. It's cheaper here in Canada! That's a first!

    Shaoxing is neither sake nor vinegar. It's distinctive, and not much like any other drink I've ever had.

    As to distributors, sorry: wouldn't know where to find the good stuff in Boston, much less Utah!

    If you need different kind of sake's might I suggest momokawa a saker in Forest Grove Oregon
